England v Ecuador: The quarter-final itself

We have the same keeper, Owen Hargreaves plays at right back instead of Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Ashley Cole as usual, Michael Carrick in the holding role, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard between David Beckham and Joe Cole, while Wayne Rooney is up front alone. 4-5-1. I don't like it but we'll see after 90mins+ has expired. Hargreaves gets the nod as he is expected to attack and cross more than Carragher. It may give option for Aaron Lennon's introduction again and Beckham goes right back later on. Given that Lampard and Gerrard like to get forward, it has the ability of being very positive, depending on how the players start from the kick-off, how their attitude is from the outset. The difference between a desire to play and a desire to win.

COME ON ENGLAND!!

I don't know if Lampard & Gerrard are getting in each others way or what but neither of them are on form. Lampard shouldn't be on the field at all. Aaron Lennon came on with a whole 3 minutes of normal time remaining and was in danger of being man of the match. Maybe for the next game Sven will really spoil him and give him 5 minutes? We couldn't score a goal in open play against an awful team who posed almost no threat at all for 90 minutes. On the other hand we're through to the quarter-finals without having got into 1st gear. Frustrated, bemused and confused I am but not excited, inspired or proud. I can't help wondering if it's possible for a team to stumble dully through to the final and win it?

Here's to something clicking into place.

Well done Beckham...saved England...or rather...the pacey Ashely Cole did...by defelecting Tenorio's shot off his kneecap and onto the bar after a terrible error by Terry.

Lucky lucky England...and I thought Ecuador were very good value. The refs still have somethign in for the smaller teams...clowing fouls like football is a non-contact sport. Beckham's free kick was the result of an innoculous challenge...and it is a sure thing that the world cup has done nothing to get rid of diving or silly games...like Robinson wasting time by going down after a save.

Good luck...Portugal is up next!

No, it wasn't pretty and we cancelled Ecuador down to little to nothing yet we lacked that killer instinct. The plus side, other than Ashley Cole as MOTM for me, was Rooney's tenacity in the second half, I hope it's there from the kick-off come Saturday. He owes the Portuguese something.

El, Lennon came on and I began to laugh as his presence made Neicer Reasco very nervous that he had to have another behind him, and just before full time came, Lennon was on the ball and Reasco stuck an unfashionable high leg wide to block Lennon out. Three minutes, imagine if it was 33mins. Rooney has a killer instinct the others are lacking, Lennon is a little terrier we should look to exploit more come Saturday.
