Van Persie vs Essien vs Taylor vs Tugay

The last couple of months have seen a purple patch of stunning strikes in the Premiership. When Arsenal's Robin van Persie scored his soaring kung-fu volley against Charlton back in October it seemed he had opened and closed the book on the goal of the season. But Matthew Taylor's forty-five yard thumping volley against Everton two weeks ago had Mark Lawrenson on Match Of The Day concluding that the emerging Portsmouth midfielder had 'undoubtedly' scored the goal of the season. A day later Chelsea's Michael Essien powered a reverse banana shot into the top corner of the Arsenal net which arguably given the context of the goal coupled with its sheer technical perfection had surpassed Taylor's effort. Add to these magnificent contenders the peach of a sweet volley struck by Blackburn's Tugay against Spurs and you have quite a sensational battle already heating up for Premiership goal of the season.

Enjoy and check out these goals again (plus some excellent celebrations and commentaries) below:

If I had to vote for one above the others I would edge for the strike by Robin van Persie: the way he flew in the air to volley the ball for me is simply scintillating. But that does not take away from the other superb strikes each of which sum up just how fantastic and awesome football can be.

Whose goal do you think edges it as the best of the Premiership season so far?

Good shout for the very promising Huddlestone: he found the sweet-spot and it pinged in... good goal!

Good support too from the Matt Taylor fan club...

Michael Essien's is the best. he had so much time to watch the ball and think exactly what he wanted to do with it. the others are more hit on instinct which are probably easier. not that any of those goals are easy.

thanks for the videos, they make superb viewing

huddlestones was class but they are all as good as each other in there own way.
van persie= how on earth did he control it
matt taylor= power and accuracy perfect
essien= getting the power and curve at the last minite in a match that big is incredable
tugay= done it before but gets better everytime you watch it

what about xabi alonso's goal from beyond the half way line against newcastle at anfield?

Thanks for some quality comments...

SKG- thanks for the reminder about Alonso's audacious effort. However, I wouldn't place it alongside these goals because the goalkeeper had a significant contribution in the goal by losing his footing really badly. If it wasn't for that I reckon the keeper would have saved the shot quite comfortably.

Despite that stupid rout of anonymous calls for Matt Taylor, he has supplied at least two superb goals, the one against Everton and then topped it with last week against Arsenal. Essien's was quite good for its power and technique and when it happened. Van Persie was good although it looked like it came off his shin than his boot (typically it is mentioned most of all here), yet Scholes scored a volley from outside the area yesterday but it gets no mention. If you mention Liverpool, I would look at Agger's goal against West Ham or even Crouch's effort against Galatasaray even though it was in the Champions League.

Come on Pompey!!!

When you talk about great goals it's usually down to technique, frequency and flamboyance. Taylor ticks all the boxes for this.

Drogba's against Everton is also worth a noteable mention.

Tugay and Schole's goals were good but probably not in the same league.
